Multimedia Intern Reporters

1. Background 

Through the Regional Media Support Fund, an Australian Government initiative supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), CamboJA is implementing a media viability initiative to strengthen visual journalism, multimedia production, and social media-first content across its Khmer- and English-language platforms. 

The project supports improved production workflows, newsroom training and coaching, and the development of new content formats such as short-form videos, visual explainers, livestreams, and video podcasts to increase audience engagement across CamboJA’s digital platforms. 

As part of this initiative, CamboJA will recruit three Multimedia Intern Reporters to support youth-led multimedia reporting on politics, human rights, environment, economy, public services, and other issues affecting Cambodian communities. 

The internship will provide selected candidates with hands-on experience in reporting, field production, multimedia storytelling, and digital content production while working alongside experienced journalists and CamboJA teams. 

2. Purpose of the Internship 

The internship aims to provide emerging journalists and media students with practical newsroom experience while supporting CamboJA’s production of high-quality, engaging, and platform-appropriate multimedia content. 

Intern Reporters will contribute to the development and production of original stories in collaboration with CamboJA’s editorial and multimedia teams. Through practical assignments, training, mentoring, and coaching, interns will develop foundational skills in journalism and multimedia storytelling, including reporting, interviewing, research, photography, video production, scripting, and social media content production. 

The internship is intended as a learning and professional development opportunity. Interns will receive guidance from experienced journalists and will gradually take on greater responsibility for story development and production based on their skills, interests, and progress. 

3. Key Responsibilities 

A. Research and Story Development 

• Assist reporters and editors in identifying and developing story ideas relevant to CamboJA’s editorial priorities and audience interests. 

• Conduct background research, fact-checking, and basic information gathering for assigned stories. 

• Conduct interviews with relevant sources, including community members, experts, officials, civil society representatives, and other stakeholders. 

• Develop story pitches and reporting plans with support from editors and mentors. 

• Contribute ideas for youth-focused and social media-first content. 

B. Multimedia Content Production 

• Produce original youth-led stories under editorial and technical supervision. 

• Assist in producing short-form videos, reels, visual explainers, photo stories, interviews, livestreams, and other digital formats. 

• Capture basic video footage, photographs, interviews, and supporting visual materials for assigned stories. 

• Assist with writing scripts, captions, headlines, and other supporting content. 

• Participate in video and podcast production, including research, preparation, recording, and basic post-production tasks where appropriate. 

• Adapt stories and visual materials for different digital platforms and audiences. 

C. Field Reporting 

• Participate in field reporting assignments individually or as part of a reporting or production team. 

• Follow appropriate journalistic, safety, ethical, and safeguarding practices during fieldwork. 

• Ensure that interviews and visual materials are collected with appropriate consent and in accordance with CamboJA’s editorial standards. 

• Maintain organised records of interview notes, photographs, video footage, audio recordings, and other production materials. 

D. Learning and Professional Development 

• Participate actively in multimedia training sessions, newsroom workshops, coaching, and mentoring activities. 

• Apply lessons from training and coaching to improve the quality of produced content. 

• Seek and respond constructively to editorial and production feedback. 

• Participate in editorial discussions, story reviews, and production debriefs. 

• Maintain a learning portfolio documenting selected work, feedback, and skills developed during the internship. 

4. Learning and Development Opportunities 

• A monthly internship stipend.

• Regular coaching and feedback from experienced reporters and editors. 

• Opportunities to collaborate with experienced CamboJA journalists on reporting and content production. 

• Practical experience in newsroom workflows and multimedia production. 

• Opportunities to develop a portfolio of published or produced work. 

• Exposure to different digital storytelling formats and platform-specific content practices. 

• Opportunities to participate in field reporting and production assignments. 

5. Eligibility Requirements and Selection Criteria 

• Be a current student, recent graduate, or emerging journalist interested in journalism, media, communications, multimedia production, or a related field. 

• Demonstrate strong interest in current affairs and issues affecting Cambodian communities, particularly topics relevant to CamboJA’s editorial focus. 

• Show motivation and willingness to learn journalism, multimedia production, digital storytelling, and social media-first content through training, coaching, and practical newsroom experience. 

• Have basic skills in reporting, interviewing, photography, video recording, video editing, or graphic design. 

• Communicate clearly, listen actively, ask questions, and interact respectfully with different people. 

• Have good Khmer language skills; English language skills are an advantage. 

• Work collaboratively, take responsibility for assigned tasks, meet agreed deadlines, and respond constructively to editorial and production feedback. 

• Demonstrate a commitment to accuracy, fairness, ethical journalism, responsible reporting, and respect for sources. 

• Be available to commit to the internship according to the agreed working arrangement. 

Candidates will be selected based on their potential, motivation, interest in journalism and multimedia storytelling, and suitability for a newsroom learning environment. Previous journalism or multimedia production experience is an advantage but not essential. 

In line with CamboJA’s commitment to inclusive participation, women, youth, persons with disabilities, indigenous people, and other underrepresented groups in the media sector are particularly encouraged to apply and will be given consideration in the selection process where candidates demonstrate comparable suitability. 

6. Selection Process 

Applications will be reviewed against the basic eligibility requirements and selection criteria. Candidates will be shortlisted based on their demonstrated interest, motivation, potential, and suitability for the internship. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview with representatives of the CamboJA newsroom. The interview will explore their interest in journalism and multimedia storytelling, their understanding of current affairs and issues affecting communities, their motivation for joining the internship, their availability and ability to commit to the internship. 

Full-time participation is preferred to enable interns to gain comprehensive newsroom experience and make full use of the training, coaching, reporting, and multimedia production opportunities provided through the internship. 

However, CamboJA recognises that some promising candidates may have study, family, or other legitimate commitments that prevent them from participating on a full-time basis. Flexible or part-time arrangements may therefore be considered for candidates who demonstrate genuine commitment to developing their skills and pursuing a pathway in multimedia journalism. Such arrangements will be discussed during the interview and agreed based on the candidate’s availability, learning needs, and the requirements of the newsroom. 

Regardless of the agreed arrangement, interns will be expected to maintain reliable attendance, participate actively in agreed training and newsroom activities, complete assigned work to the required standard, and meet agreed deadlines.

• A sample of relevant work, if available, such as published articles, videos, photo stories, social media content, or other multimedia work.

Candidates who do not have previous published work are encouraged to apply and may submit relevant academic, personal, or practice-based work where available.
