1. Background

CamboJA is a membership association of Cambodian journalists and media workers established in 2019 in the wake of rapid decline of press freedom in the country. To contribute to the inclusive and sustainable development in Cambodia, we, the CamboJA envision that, “Everyone (living in Cambodia) enjoy freedom of the press and the right of access to information.” We mandate ourselves to promote freedom of the press, provide credible news, and support and protect journalists at risk or harassed. CamboJA works assertively with all stakeholders to build a strong journalist and media professional community in Cambodia focusing on capacity building, advocacy, strengthening support base, and building enabling environment for independent journalists.

Under a UNESCO IPDC-funded project completed in 2024, CamboJA partnered with a Journalism Safety Research Expert of the Center for Freedom of the Media based at the University of Sheffield to develop and standardize CamboJA's journalists safety monitoring framework/methodology to be aligned with international human rights standards and UNESCO's Journalists Safety Indicators. The framework was launched in December 2024 and has been operationalized from January 2025 onward. To review the methodology, please visit CamboJA's latest annual report.
